Mind Body Problem

Is the mind the very same thing as the brain?

Or is it quite different?

Your thoughts?

  1. I have said clearly in our meeting that I believe that the brain is the very same thing as what we call mind. However after hearing what people have said today in the meeting and after watching these videos I am a bit confused now.

I used to believe that the brain and the mind are the same thing but the argument that was mentioned today in the meeting about how animal run their bodies using their brains and their lack to mind to show their feelings, emotions,,,, etc seems pretty convincing. Eventhough that argument almost made me take its side, I thought about it after awhile and I said to myself is it really the brain that makes the animal do what it do or is it their instinct .

Despite the arguments that support the idea that mind and brain are two different things I cannot ignore the biochemical facts that shows that every feeling we have is related normally to a chemical substance being realised by the brain into our bodies to make us fell what we usually fell love, sad, happy etc,,,,,

  2. It's an interesting point of view, Mohaned... by the way i think mind and brain are very different things. AS you said, using the example of the animals we could assume they have no mind... but they have brain. They act instinctively.

So the human race differs from the rest of the animals because we developed what we call 'mind'. I believe brain shapes the mind, but it doesn't contains it. The Brain provides the information for the mind to work, but no more, mind works independently. We can also say mind is located on the brain... because when we use our mind (let's call it subconscious) we use a small part of our brain, it shows neuronal activity.
